"Ring the Golden Bell" is a new playground for students in Nghia Lo town. It aims to offer an opportunity for them to experience and compete in terms of English ability, thus, improving communication skills as well as the learning quality of the subject.

Forty fourth and fifth graders selected from schools in the locality took part in the contest. They had to answer questions raised by foreign teachers, which revolved around the school curriculum and were associated with cultural and social knowledge relevant to their age and knowledge level.

Before the competition took place, the students took drawn to choose their seats. On the stage, the contestants listened to the questions and answered on their boards within the allotted time. Foreign teachers read the questions and the students had 10 seconds to think and give answers. If their answers were correct, they would move to the next round. If their answers were wrong, they would be knocked out of the competition.

When only 20% of the initial participants remained on the stage, those who were ousted earlier would receive the help of the teacher to return to the contest by joining a movement game. If there were still many players after 25 questions, additional questions would be used. The students who stayed to the end would be the winner of the contest.

Dinh Thi Thu Thuy - Director of New Vision Centre said improving the teaching and learning of foreign languages, especially English - a global language - is a top priority for education establishments. Thus, the centre wants to organise more "Ring the Golden Bell" contests to create a meaningful playground for students as well as foster the development of English teaching and learning movement, she added.
