YBO - Muong Lo, including Nghia Lo township and part of Van Chan district in Yen Bai province, is considered the ancient land of the Black Thai ethnic minority group in the northwest region of Vietnam.

Since they set foot in this fertile, rich but still unspoiled land, those who pioneer in making their livelihoods have always had to fight against the enemy.

The six ancient xoe dances reflect the battle of ancestors who unite against the enemy, creating the strength to exploit the land and bless for a prosperous life.

When society has developed to a certain level, Thai people gradually become aware of the universe, the relationship between heaven, earth and man as well as the role of human beings in that relationship. Xoe dances convey beautiful cultural and human values as well as profound philosophies, which are implied in each movement.

The six ancient dances of the Muong Lo Black Thai ethnic people are basic movements of xoe dance and cannot be performed without learning.

At first, the dance was very simple without any set process. Gradually, it became more and more sophisticated due to the improved skills of the dancers. They now include a total of 36 ancient dances typical of Thai folk art.

The ancient xoe dances like a miniature Thai society, reflecting life, thought, emotion and aspirations, bringing a unique character.

Along with the lyrical rhythms and sound of panpipes, the six ancient xoe dances are taking roots in people's hearts.

Thanks to xoe dances, people get closer to each other and have motivation in their daily life. Through the ancient dances, one can also see the life of Thai society from the beginning as well as their views and outlooks of the world.

The six ancient dances reflect the reality of life, so they serve as moral education for each person, contributing to forming a cultural identity. These dances also express the high aesthetic value of an ethnic group which is capable of spreading in a large space and time.

In the history of human development, people have created art forms that enrich their lives, helping them have more confidence to exist and develop. Six ancient dances aim to reflect healthy aesthetic feelings in front of the majestic nature, the struggles for survival and the industrious spirit of generations.
