Sport tourism - trend and potential in Yen Bai

YBO - Over recent years, sports tourism has been introduced into Vietnam and is gaining popularity in the Southeast Asian nation. Yen Bai province has grasped the opportunity, especially the “golden” period, to recover the local tourism sector. The province has seriously invested in sport tourism, making it an impulse to attract more visitors.

With special cultural and tourism resources, Yen Bai boasts potential and advantages to promote this kind of tourism.

The province has focused on developing sport tourism products and hosting sport events at both provincial and national levels.

Last year, the People’s Committee of the mountainous district of Mu Cang Chai and Viet Jungle Company co-organised the Mu Cang Chai Ultra Trail Marathon.

The race brought together 750 athletes competing in different categories - 15 km, 25 km and 50 km. They ran along mountain slopes and terraced fields, where they explored traditional cultural values in Mu Cang Chai.

Athlete Pham Hoang Tung, who travelled a lot and participated in many tournaments of this kind, said he was most impressed by the landscape and cuisines in Yen Bai.

The runner said he plans to return to Mu Cang Chai in 2023 for the race, and to learn more about the land.

Tourism development in combination with sport events has been seen as fresh wind blowing through Yen Bai. In order to bring into full play its potential, strengths, terrain and unique identities, the locality has coordinated in organising paragliding festivals and motor and auto racing.

In addition, local tourist sites have offered such services as kayak, cycling, and golf to lure more holidaymakers. Travel firms have also joined hands to launch trekking tours.


Viettreking Travel Services JSC has launched climbing tours conquering the 2,865-m Ta Xua peak, one of the 15 highest mountains in Vietnam, which is dubbed as "dinosaur-back" by backpackers in Ban Cong commune, Tram Tau district, along with others exploring Ta Chi Nhu and Lung Cung mountainous.

In recent years, Yen Bai City has actively developed spiritual tourism through traditional sacred festivals held at temples and pagodas, drawing large numbers of locals and visitors. These activities not only honor spiritual values but also contribute significantly to preserving national cultural and historical heritage.

Many tourists have chosen the Lavie Vu Linh Ecotourism Area, located in Ngoi Tu hamlet, Vu Linh commune, Yen Binh district, as a stop on their travel journey.

In the first quarter of 2025, Yen Binh District welcomed 94,789 visitors for sightseeing and experiential tourism. Among them, international arrivals reached 12,445, accounting for 31.1% of the provincial target and marking an increase of 14.9% compared to the same period in 2024.
