Last February, two 12-year-old students in To Mau commune, Luc Yen district, drowned, raising the alarm among local residents.

To ensure safety for children, especially during summer holidays, communal authorities have taken solutions to prevent drownings and other accidents in all hamlets, while raising the awareness of parents and caregivers about regular attention to their children.

Over the past three years, more than 10 children in Luc Yen died due to drownings. Therefore, the district has asked all the 24 communes and towns to review the entire system of lakes, rivers, streams and reservoirs that pose risks of accidents to children, and strengthen coordination in the communications work.

Hoang Thi Thuy, head of the Bureau of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs of Luc Yen, said the district has asked all communes and towns to cover wells and tanks, and put up fences and warning signs at lakes, rivers, streams, and irrigation facilities this summer.

like Luc Yen, Van Yen district also stepped up the information work to better take care of children before the summer holiday, and equipped local children with necessary living skills.

The district has reviewed high-risk locations and installed fences and warning signs, and increased personnel to supervise the areas during rainy days. Up to 88 warning signs have been placed so far.

As a mountainous province, Yen Bai is home to many rivers, streams, and lakes which pose the risk of drownings, especially in rural areas. The province has directed relevant departments, localities, and organisations to roll out concerted, practical, suitable measures, encouraged households to better take care of their children and ensure safety for them, and mobilised different economic sectors in building sports facilities offering swimming courses for children.

Departments and agencies in Yen Bai have actively collaborated in implementing such models as "Safe Homes," "Safe Schools," and "Safe Communities" to prevent accidents and injuries, specifically drownings, among children.

They have also regularly inspected law compliance and taken timely measures to prevent child drownings.
