YBO - Instead of using blackboards or chalks, with a laptop connected to the Internet and a projector, students can learn and speak in English to their peers around the world like India, China, and Singapore. This is part of a “borderless” lesson of Nguyen Thi Thuy, a teacher of English at the Tran Phu Primary School in Yen The township of Luc Yen district, Yen Bai province.

Kieu Trang Ngoc, a student of Class 4C, said she loves and is excited to engage in such "borderless” lessons through which she and her classmates can learn, access, and communicate in English with other around the world and acquire more knowledge about the culture and people of many countries.

Sharing the view, Tran Gia Phuc from Class 5D said they are very happy and excited to talk to foreign peers at English lessons where they introduce themselves, their families, hometowns, and countries to one another. These lessons have helped them learn not only English but also other knowledge.

Tran Phu Primary School started piloting the "borderless” class model for English lessons in the 2020 - 2021 academic year. It has more than 1,300 students in the 2022 - 2023 academic year.

To improve the quality of English teaching and learning, the school’s leaders and teachers of English have referred to organisation and management experiences of other schools, particularly the role models in foreign language teaching and learning, across Yen Bai province.

Teacher Nguyen Thi Thuy noted a difficulty in holding lessons connected with teachers and students in other countries is time and weather differences. Sometimes when the class in Vietnam is ready, the foreign one is unable to get connected due to bad weather. Besides, because of different time zones, the school has to change the time of lessons so that its teachers and students can meet foreign ones.

In particular, the knowledge provided in each lesson of Vietnamese and foreign students is different, so local teachers have to make plans early and discuss with foreign colleagues to reach agreement on topics of lessons.

Nguyen Thi Kim Thanh, Principal of the Tran Phu Primary School, said the "borderless” class model that her school is implementing has helped students improve their knowledge about other countries’ culture and people and inspired their love for English. It has also helped teachers of English gain new knowledge and meet foreign colleagues, thereby helping with reforming teaching methods and improving the quality of teaching and extra-curricular activities of the school.

The "borderless” class model at the Tran Phu Primary School is not only a form of IT application and digital transformation in education but also serves as an impulse for the school to continue reforms to gradually improve teaching and learning quality in the time ahead, she added.
