Lim Thai village in Cao Pha commune of Mu Cang Chai district is home to 200 households with 1,000 people, all of them Thai people. Previously, there were 5-6 cases of child marriage in the village every year. Since 2020, the situation has been minimised.

Vi Thi Huong in Lim Thai village – one of the cases that was campaigned by communal population propagandists to not get married early, said her parents died early, and she is the third child in the family. After finishing Grade 9, she intended to get married to help her younger brothers and sisters to have better learning conditions. After being explained by population officials of the village about the harmful effects of getting married at a young age, she decided to halt her plan.

Child and consanguineous marriage in Mu Cang Chai as well as other areas of the province deprives people of opportunities to study, find good jobs, and improve their living conditions; and seriously affects the quality of the population.

The situation is attributed to evil customs existing in ethnic minority groups, poor punishment against violations of the Marriage and Family Law, and limitations in popularising about consequences of child and consanguineous marriage in schools.

Facing the situation, in 2020, provincial authorities issued Plan No. 191-KH/TU dated April 18, 2020, on piloting the repelling of child and consanguineous marriage in Tram Tau and Mu Cang Chai districts, and illegal entry and exit in Van Chan district.

In Mu Cang Chai, many solutions have been taken after two years implementing the plan. The engagement of the entire political system has contributed to raising the public awareness of the harmful effects of child and consanguineous marriage. The number of child marriage cases decreased from 89 in 2019 to 47, 27 and 13 in 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively.
