Yen Bai teacher uses poems to teach history

YBO - With more than 3,000 verses of luc bat (six-eight) poem briefing world history from the primitive period to 2015, Le Van Cuong, a history teacher of Cam An high school in Yen Bai’s Yen Binh district set a national record for the longest poem explaining world history in the form of luc bat in 2016.

In 2018, the teacher's epic poem on Vietnamese history featuring 36,000 verses was also honoured in the Vietnam Book of Records.

With passion and aspirations for teaching history through poems, he published a book on Yen Bai history, also in the form of a poem, earning respect from those who are in love with history and the province.

During more than 10 years teaching the subject, Cuong has never ceased to brainstorm to come up with effective teaching methods so as to deliver knowledge to both his students and readers. The three books on history of the world, Vietnam and Yen Bai serve as proof for his passion.

In the 2021-22 academic year, Cuong taught History in five classes but no lecture was the same as others. He sought new ways to teach, combining luc bat verses on history with information technology application. He put efforts in spicing up the lessons to help students memorise historical events.

 

A book compiled by Cuong features 3,456 luc bat verses that brief world history from the primitive period to 2015.

The luc bat verses help his students learn history as Cuong believes that teacher’s passion will inspire students.

His book on Yen Bai history attracts a lot of attention despite just being published recently. He thoroughly studied local history to write more than 9,000 luc bat verses which describe Yen Bai’s development process from primitive era to 2020.

The book comprises of 18 chapters, with reference from official historical documents. Each period is summarised with luc bat verses.

His passion helped him complete the book of luc bat verses on Yen Bai history, with took him a year to do so. He pointed out that students do not pay much attention to local history as it is not included in exams. However, that knowledge will be helpful after they graduate, contributing to the development of their hometown, he affirmed.

In addition to his three published books, Cuong is working to adapt some books and novels to luc bat verses to help people memorise them more quickly.

He voiced a hope that his works will help kindle the love for history among his readers and students.
