Over the years, Yen Bai has shown strong performance in HIV/AIDS control in three criteria – reducing the new HIV infection number, AIDS death toll, and the number of people developing full-blown AIDS.

To this end, Yen Bai has implemented comprehensive and timely measures, focusing on strengthening interference communications on preventing HIV transmission, as well as popularising information on HIV/AIDS via the mass media as well as in small groups and in the community and health care facilities.

Each year, the province gives free needles and condoms to more than 1,000 drug addicts and people with high risk of infection to reduce the risk of HIV transmission in the community.

Currently, Yen Bai has 13 health care facilities providing antiretroviral drugs (ARV) to 1,668 patients. So far 99 percent of patients undertaking ARV therapy are covered by health insurance, which is a breakthrough in ARV supply to ensure the sustainability in AIDS treatment.

Of the total patients, 96 percent have had their HIV viral load reduced to below the limit of detection, reducing the risk of HIV transmission to the community following the principle of "Undetectable = Untransmittable”.

This year, the action month for HIV/AIDS is themed "Strengthening HIV prevention and control amid COVID-19 pandemic.” Along with strengthening communications on HIV/AIDS prevention and control, Yen Bai will expand HIV testing in the community to ensure that 95 percent of people living with HIV know their conditions.

At the same time, the locality will work to detect and supervise HIV patients, strengthening the capacity in ARV treatment for health care facilities at the district level, aiming to ensure that 95 percent of people living with HIV access ARV treatment. Yen Bai will prioritise solutions to reduce social stigma and discrimination against HIV patients. The province will provide mobile consultations and testing for people with high risks of infection in remote and mountainous areas, while expanding treatment services for HIV-infected people in detention camps and prisons.

Particular attention will be paid to HIV/AIDS patient care and treatment, ensuring that people living with HIV receive continuous ARV therapy amid COVID-19 pandemic.
