Practical activities of the clubs have fostered a campaign aiming to encourage the elderly to lead a happy, healthy and helpful life.

A club in Tran Thanh 2 village in Au Lau commune of Yen Bai city has 54 members. Vu Thi Yen, who worked at the commune’s clinic before retirement, joined the club when it was set up in 2017.

With her role as a member of the club's administration group along with her own professional skills, she helps other members take their blood pressure, body temperature and weight, as well as provides consultations so as to help them take care of their health.

Clubs regularly visit and assist each other in holding activities, and share experience in how to develop household businesses.

Yen Bai city is home to three clubs of this kind in Minh Bao, Gioi Phien and Au Lau communes, with more than 150 members.

Head of the elderly association in Yen Bai city Tran Huu Binh said that despite the complexities of COVID-19, the clubs are operating as usual through groups in Zalo social networking app, to inform each other of necessary tasks and remind members to closely follow the Ministry of Health’s 5K message.

To date, Yen Binh district has founded four clubs with 230 members in total in the communes of Phu Thinh, Xuan Long, Ngoc Chan and Cam Nhan, offering a place for senior citizens to engage in social activities.

In accordance with Decision No.71 dated January 17, 2017 of the provincial People’s Committee on the expansion of the intergenerational club model during 2016-20, Yen Bai has a total of 30 clubs with more than 1,300 members.

The model has proved effective at grassroots level in line with the implementation of the national target programme on building new-style rural areas.
