Located 80 km from Yen Bai city, Muong Lo is the northern region’s second largest rice field after Muong Thanh field in Dien Bien province.
Muong Lo is known as one of the birthplaces of the ancient Thai people. It is home to 17 ethnic minority groups with the Black Thai accounting for the largest number because they have lived there for the longest time.

The flow of history has blended the unique identities of the Thai, Kho Mu, Tay, Dao and other ethnic groups, creating a Muong Lo culture, which is imbued with cultural identities of local ethnic groups and also has unique features, contributing to enriching the cultural heritage treasure of Vietnam.
In the framework of this year’s Muong Lo Cultural and Tourism Festival, visitors have an opportunity to enjoy folk games, try paragliding activities to admire the Muong Lo Valley, and join a mass Xoe dance of the Thai ethnic people – the art that was listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 16th session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage last year.

An art performance programme themed "Muong Lo – the region of heritage” was the highlight of the opening night of the Muong Lo Cultural and Tourism Festival last weekend. The programme included three chapters with performances elaborately choreographed. They recreated the formation and development history of Muong Lo – Nghia Lo land, and the cultural identities of ethnic communities in Yen Bai province.
Muong Lo is expected to be a "safe, friendly, unique, and attractive destination" for tourists on their journey to explore culture and tourism in the Northwest.

This will serve as a momentum for Yen Bai to realise its goal of developing Nghia Lo into a cultural hub, a tourism destination and an economic, commerce and service centre in the western region of Yen Bai province.
Under the master plan of Yen Bai province in 2021 - 2030 approved by the Prime Minister, Nghia Lo town will become a cultural and heritage urban area in the near future.
