Yen Bai aims to improve adolescent reproductive health

YBO - Recently, Yen Bai province has faced concerning reproductive health statistics, with the pregnancy rate among women aged 15-19 reaching 15.5% in Mu Cang Chai district and 9.6% in Van Chan district. Home births remain prevalent, with 63.1% occurring in Mu Cang Chai and 13.5% in Van Chan.

In response to these challenges, the "Improving Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health" project, funded by Save the Children International, is being implemented across six communes in Mu Cang Chai and Van Chan districts. The project has a total budget of over VND 3.4 billion.

The project targets women, children, and particularly adolescents. Since the beginning of the year, communication activities under the project have been implemented in four secondary and high schools in the two districts.

In Mu Cang Chai, the project management board has closely coordinated with relevant stakeholders to organize activities such as setting up adolescent-friendly clinics at five locations across three communes, as well as at the district health center and private medical clinics.

Through this initiative, the project has provided consultations and safe sexual and reproductive health services to nearly 40 adolescents. Additionally, integrated communication events on adolescent reproductive and sexual health were held in 15 villages of Che Cu Nha, La Pan Tan, and Pung Luong communes, drawing participation from over 900 people.

Dr. Tran Van Quang, Director of the Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital and Deputy Head of the Project Management Board for the "Improvement of Reproductive and Sexual Health for Adolescents" in the province, stated: "Based on preliminary evaluations, ethnic minority adolescents, along with their parents, teachers, healthcare workers, and communities in the project areas, have shown improvements in knowledge, behaviors, and practices regarding reproductive and sexual health care".
