Yen Bai enforces policies to help people reduce poverty

YBO - Last year, Yen Bai spent over 6.24 trillion VND on implementing five projects under the National Target Programme for Poverty Reduction and enforcing six support policies for poverty reduction.

The northern province allocated funding sourced from Programmes 30a and 135 to develop 149 infrastructure projects, and repair and maintain seven others in poor districts. 

The funding was also poured into 273 production projects which have so far supported a total of more than 37,600 local households in expanding production, diversifying livelihoods and scaling up poverty elimination models.

Local budget was also used to finance 67 similar projects which have attracted 907 households.

The province has issued close to 537,000 health insurance cards and supported the renovation and repair of over 1,170 houses of poor families and people who rendered services to the nation. Needy people have also been beneficial from support policies in electricity, education and access to soft loans.

Awareness campaign has been accelerated in poverty reduction, with about 21,500 leaflets and close to 1,930 manual books on the matter given away, while 70 TV sets have been presented to impoverished households to help them updates news and learn ways to earn a living.

Thanks to such efforts, the number of poor households in Yen Bai last year declined 4.52 percent from 2019 to 15,371, while there were 18,280 near-poor households, down 2,234 year-on-year.

This year, the province targets to further cut the poverty rate by 2.05 percent, with the districts of Tram Tau and Mu Cang Chai expected to see the rate falling over 6.5 percent.

Recently, Yen Bai province has faced concerning reproductive health statistics, with the pregnancy rate among women aged 15-19 reaching 15.5% in Mu Cang Chai district and 9.6% in Van Chan district. Home births remain prevalent, with 63.1% occurring in Mu Cang Chai and 13.5% in Van Chan.
