Since 2020, a project to develop value chains with connection of production and selling activities has been implemented by Lung Lo cooperative in Thuong Bang La commune, Van Chan district. Under the project, plant varieties, fertilizers and necessary materials are provided to 19 farmer households to cultivate 14.6 hectares of herbal plants.

The cooperative has given instructions to farmers in herbal plant cultivation, while registering quality standards for their products and buying all the products for processing and selling. It has also guided local farmers to follow the production process required to get the GACP-WHO certificate.

Sam Van Nua, Vice Director of the Lung Lo Cooperative said that in 2021, the cooperative earned 1 billion VND (43,946 USD) in revenue and created jobs for 20-60 labourers.

As of the end of 2021, Van Chan had developed 681 hectares of herbal plants. Various support policies have been applied towards the target of 1,200 hectares of herbal plants in 2025, including 105 hectares of concentrated farms, and 1,095 hectares of scattered fields, with an annual output of 5,000-7,000 tonnes, creating jobs for 600-1,200 local labourers.

Over the years, the provincial Oriental Medicine Association has directed its chapters at all levels to strengthen the discovery, collection, conservation and development of local herbal plants.

In 2021, the association conducted a survey on potential herbal plants across the province, finding 35 kinds of plants with high medical and economical values for cultivation in value chains. At the same time, it has organised 18 training courses for 20 local farmer households in Xuan Long commune of Yen Binh district, and provided 10,000 seedlings of hepatica to locals in Thuong Bang La commune, Van Chan district.

Developing herbal plants is one of the provinice's 15 major support policies for agro-forestry-fisheries development in the 2021-2025 period. Farmers who plant at least 5 hectares of new herbal plant farms have received support of 70 percent of cost for seedlings and fertilizers at maximum amount of 2 billion VND (87,970 USD).

At the end of 2021, two projects in Van Chan and Tran Yen had received assistance worth over 2.22 billion VND.

Currently, Yen Bai has over 3,880 hectares of herbal plant farms in value chains, surpassing the plan by 82 hectares. At the same time, many effective cultivation models have been developed, such as Vien Son cooperative and Yen Bai Thanh Son cooperative in Van Yen district, and Lung Lo cooperative in Van Chan.
