Education promotion for ethnic minority people in Mu Cang Chai

YBO - This year, an illiteracy elimination class was opened for ethnic minority women in Pung Luong commune, Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province as part of a concerted effort between the provincial education promotion association and the district’s education and training division.

Some 90 percent of Pung Luong’s population are H’mong ethnic minority people with a relatively high poverty rate. The commune’s education promotion association has diversified ways of communications to raise awareness of the public, civil servants and Party members on the importance of education, talent promotion and building a learning society.

The communal association has coordinated with hamlets and villages and the education and training sector to provide teachers, students and parents with better understanding of the Party and State’s policies on education and lifelong learning. It has also joined efforts to encourage ethnic minority students to go to school, thanks to that, school attendance rate has remained above 95 percent.

President of Pung Luong education promotion association Ly A Tua said the association has been expanding thanks to the effectiveness of the communications work. This year, the association has established a new chapter, raising the total to 13. There are also 5 chapters based in families and five others based in enterprises and organisations.

Additionally, the association has organized short-term vocational training courses for local residents which aim to foster use of technology in production, improve productivity and contribute to poverty eradication.

Recently, Yen Bai province has faced concerning reproductive health statistics, with the pregnancy rate among women aged 15-19 reaching 15.5% in Mu Cang Chai district and 9.6% in Van Chan district. Home births remain prevalent, with 63.1% occurring in Mu Cang Chai and 13.5% in Van Chan.
