YBO - To implement a project on improving the capacity of governing the medicinal plant value chain, the Yen Bai Centre for Development of Science - Technology and Community Healthcare (YEN BAI CDSH), has carried out various activities to assist residents in the project's target area to successfully develop a medicinal plant value chain, thus helping improve local livelihoods and income.

Ha Thi Thoa, a resident in Goc Quan hamlet of Dong Cuong commune, Van Yen district, has cultivated "ca gai leo” (Solanum trilobatum) on nearly 2,000 sq.m. of land since early 2020. She said this plant is used for making medicine, so proper cultivation and care will decide the content of substances in the herb and the harvest output, which will subsequently affect the income from this plant.

Taking part in the project, her family has received seedling assistance, accessed technical advances, and been helped to seek buyers, she said, noting that they harvest the plant thrice a year, with about 0.7 tonne of dried plant each crop.

Apart from Thoa, 52 other households farming nearly 6ha of "ca gai leo” in Dong Cuong and Mau Dong communes of Van Yen district, and Cam An and Bao Ai communes of Yen Binh district have engaged in this project and benefited from its assistance.

The medicinal plant, cultivated by using advanced techniques under a value chain and free of chemical substances, has generated clean and useful products for consumers’ health.

After harvested, materials will be dried and processed to turn into paste or dry glue. Added with diverse designs and packages, the finished products are able to compete with rivals in the market. The local "ca gai leo” paste was recongised as a three-star product under the "One Commune, One Product” (OCOP) programme in Van Yen district.

Thanks to the project’s support, a "ca gai leo” value chain has taken shape. Basing on that success, YEN BAI CDSH has continued assisting the establishment of a new medicinal plant value chain. The project has invited experts to survey local conditions and people’s demand so as to help with the formation of two value chains for "khoi nhung” (Ardisia silvestris) in Xuan Long commune of Yen Binh district and "la gan” (planto hepato) in Thuong Bang La commune of Van Chan district.

YEN BAI CDSH has set up and maintained groups of interest and models of growing materials for medicinal plant value chains. It has organised training courses on business ethics and social responsibility for participants in the value chains. Besides, the centre has also proposed sponsors fund the building of drying facilities for "khoi nhung” and paste cooking machines for "la gan”.
