The HKIMO 2021 was held by the Olympiad Champion Education Centre based in Hong Kong (China). Every year, it attracts hundreds of thousands of contestants from numerous countries and territories around the world.

This year’s event saw the participation of contestants from 30 countries and territories, namely Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Hong Kong, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, India, Iran, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Pakistan, Switzerland, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam.

Thai said since he was a primary student, he has been highly interested in online mathematics competitions, including those in English, and obtained several national prizes. When at the 6th grade, the school called for participants in the HKIMO, and he immediately registered to take part in with the hope of learning more about mathematics.

The Olympiad consisted of three rounds: the national qualifying round, the national final round, and the international final round.

Thai successfully overcame the qualifying round held online to advance to the national finals in April 2021.

The national final round was initially scheduled to take place in Hanoi. However, the COVID-19 resurgence forced organisers to hold it at the Quang Trung Secondary School in Yen Bai city.

In mid-June, Thai was informed that he had secured a gold medal in the national final round. After that, the organising board provided him with training materials which he considered a priceless gift as they helped Thai not only access new math knowledge but also improve his English language skills.

He viewed the Olympiad not as a competition to vie for prizes but as a chance for him to make acquaintance of new friends nationwide.

Each country chose a venue for organising the HKIMO, and in Vietnam, it was initially Hanoi capital. However, as the pandemic situation showed complex developments ahead of the competition, the organising board decided to hold the international final round online in late August.

The silver medal at the HKIMO is not only the recognition of Thai’s efforts but also a driving force for his peers and students in disadvantaged areas to surmount difficulties and master knowledge.
