Nghia Lo township's women assisted in economic development

YBO - Implementing a project to support woman in beginning business in the 2017-2025 period and the movement of “women showing strong performance in economic production,” the Women’s Union in Nghia Lo township of Yen Bai province has supported the formation of economic development models of women, maintaining seven women-led enterprises and assisting 215 members in developing new livelihood models and launching 189 business models.

The "Muong Lo Women Entrepreneurs’ Club” was formed in 2004 and it now has 41 members. In 2020, the members earned 70.5 billion VND in total, contributing 4.2 billion VND to the State budget and creating jobs for 250 labourers, including 205 women.

Luu Thi Lan, head of the club, said that in the past five years, members of the club have supported poor local women with hundreds of millions of VND in cash and kind. Last year, the club  donated more than 70 million VND to the "Tet for the poor” programme and COVID-19 prevention and control activities.

So far, the Women’s Union of the township has assisted the formation of one cooperative and 95 cooperative groups with 388 members. Notably, the organic agricultural production cooperative run by the Women’s Union of Phuc Son commune was set up in July 2020, covering 12 sectors. The major products by the cooperative include organic Seng Cu rice, which is cultivated on 1.5 hectares of farm each crop, and organic vegetables and fruits with nearly 1 hectares. The products have been sold in safe farm produce shops in Yen Bai city and Hanoi.

As part of efforts to implement the project to support women in economic development in the 2017-2025 period in line with the movement of "women showing strong performance in economic production,” over the past five years, the Women’s Union of Nghia Lo has encouraged 1,115 member households to engage in highly effective economic models, while coordinating with relevant agencies to organise 245 training courses on farming and breeding techniques for over 7,000 members and women in rural areas.

Thanks to the application of technology in production, more than 1,000 members of the union have enjoyed incomes of more than 100 million VND per year, forming more than 300 effective women-led economic models, and promoting the production of high-quality rice with 500 hectares having "Geographic indications for Muong Lo rice”, along the production of flowers, pomelo, sweet grass, dragon fruit, plum and bitter melon.

Recently, Yen Bai province has faced concerning reproductive health statistics, with the pregnancy rate among women aged 15-19 reaching 15.5% in Mu Cang Chai district and 9.6% in Van Chan district. Home births remain prevalent, with 63.1% occurring in Mu Cang Chai and 13.5% in Van Chan.
