Implementing the district's Medicinal Plant Development Project for the 2021–2025 period, with a vision toward 2030, Mu Cang Chai has focused on raising awareness and encouraging residents to utilize land potential to develop medicinal plants under forest canopies.

During 2024, local communes and towns planted 41.8 hectares of new medicinal plants, including 34.8 hectares of cinnamon, 2 hectares of gastrodia elata, 3 hectares of platycodon grandiflorus, and 2 hectares of amomum villosum. This expanded the district’s total medicinal plant cultivation area to 2,602.2 hectares. The primary plants include son tra, cardamom, coix seed (Job's tears), Ngoc Linh ginseng, and others, yielding a total output of 2,590 tons.

In addition to cultivated medicinal plants, local residents also harvest naturally occurring species such as codonopsis, che day (wild tea), lan kim tuyen (anoectochilus), thất diệp nhất chi hoa (Paris polyphylla), bo cot toai (drynaria), rock ginseng, ba kich (morinda officinalis), lingzhi mushrooms, and phục linh (tuckahoe). These activities provide significant income, contributing to poverty alleviation and economic development for the community.

With its vast potential for developing medicinal plants, Mu Cang Chai district hopes for policies from various levels and sectors to encourage investment and support enterprises in purchasing and processing medicinal products locally. Special attention is needed for son tra (hawthorn) and cardamom to enhance product quality, diversify offerings, stabilize market outlets, and increase residents’ incomes.

Additionally, the district seeks policies for proper management, conservation, and sustainable exploitation of natural medicinal resources. Mu Cang Chai also calls for increased funding support and the transfer of scientific and technological advancements to help residents cultivate medicinal plants independently. These measures aim to preserve and sustainably utilize natural medicinal species while promoting local production.
