Yen Bai’s efforts to eliminate poverty prove fruitful

YBO - Thanks to the drastic implementation of the national target programme on sustainable poverty reduction for 2016 - 2020, the household poverty rate in Yen Bai province was brought down to 7.04 percent last year, while the rate among ethnic minority households has dropped by 7.66 percent annually on average.

Notably, the number of particularly disadvantaged communes fell 26.3 percent to 59, and of particularly disadvantaged villages down 16.9 percent to 383.

Khang A Chua, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of mountainous Tram Tau district, said the breakthrough solution to carry out the national target programme is to identify beneficiary groups and provide appropriate support for them. As a result, poor and near-poor households in Tram Tau respectively decreased by 7.8 percent and 12.49 percent annually during the 2016 - 2020 period.

In Mu Cang Chai district, the household poverty rate also declined by about 8.6 percent each year over the last five years. All communes in the district now have asphalted or concrete roads leading to their centres, along with medical centres capable of supplying health insurance-covered services. Besides, 96 percent of the local households have gained access to hygienic water.

Every year, the provincial Party Committee issues a plan on the implementation of poverty reduction tasks. In this plan, it defines detailed targets for each communal-level localities and assigns specific tasks to leaders of Party committees and agencies, thereby engaging the entire political system in the task so as to leave no one behind.

Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Do Duc Duy said over the past years, Yen Bai has reformed its mindset and working methods to carry out many practical and creative solutions.

Fifty-one departments, agencies, sectors, organisations, and collectives have been assigned to assist 1,072 poor households in the province to escape from poverty so that this year, Yen Bai can reduce the number of deprived households by 2.05 percent from 2020, he noted.

Besides, the province has mobilised and effectively used different resources for poverty elimination. It has also moved to help the poor develop and diversify their livelihoods or go to work abroad for certain periods of time.

Between 2016 and 2020, more than 15.43 trillion VND from different sources was mobilised for efforts to reduce poverty sustainably, including over 7.47 trillion VND from the central budget, 2.75 trillion VND from the local budget, and 1.44 trillion VND from other poverty elimination programmes, projects, and policies.
