YBO - It is easier to assign homework to students during days off due to COVID-19 outbreak in urban areas than remote, rural and minority-inhabited areas where living conditions remain in difficulty.

Phuc Son primary school lies in Nghia Lo town where local lives mostly rely on agriculture, particularly in remote and mountainous villages.

Hoang Thi Ngoc Lan, head teacher of 5E class at Phuc Son primary school, said she assigns homework to students each Monday. After collecting them, she will check who needs further teaching at home. This morning, she went to a student’s house on the hill. Despite far distance and rough road, she still felt responsible for coming there.

In compliance with education and training sector’s directions, since days off are allowed due to the outbreak, teachers have handed out assignments to students apart from disinfection and intensive training.

Similar to Phuc Son primary school, a secondary school in Hanh Son commune also gave homework to students. Teachers built homework sheets for each subject, photocopied them and then gave to counterparts to hand out to students.

"The commune has 10 villages, and all students received learning materials. Those who have mobile phones will take photos of their work and send to teachers via social media. Those who do not have will be taught by teachers at home. They will do homework on notebooks which will be checked again when they return to school”, said Principal of Hanh Son secondary school Doan ThiThuy.

Guiding students to revise lessons at home and encouraging schools to assign homework are among the measures that the Office of Education-Training of Nghia Lo commune has adopted to ensure uninterrupted teaching.

Preschools and schools offer daily instructions to parents while teachers choose poems, songs and stories that suit students’ age to send to parents.

For elementary level, focus is given to lesson revision, knowledge consolidation, and prevention of overload for students.

Teachers at secondary schools are assigned to build self-study guidance for each subject, making it easier for students to systemise their knowledge.

The content must ensure requirements such as summary of key knowledge, illustrative examples, lessons and questionnaires. As for 9thgraders, they will be guided how to revise lessons and take tests in preparation for the high school entrance exam. Apart from compulsory curricula, lessons about epidemic prevention and life skills are also incorporated into appropriate subjects.

Lo ThiTuyet Dung, head of the Education and Training Office of Nghia Lo township said for students who do not have access to modern technology, schools partnered with local authorities and mass organisations to send learning tasks to students. All students in Nghia Lo town have so far been given homework.
