In order to help farm produce gain a foothold in the market, Yen Bai has stepped up policies in support of enterprises and cooperatives producing agro-forestry products under standard production processes and certified products while seeking key markets.

As a result, the province has so far had 83 units meeting VietGAP certification standards, and six products registering geographical indication protection.

A number of key local products have gained a foothold in the domestic market and overcome strict standards to be shipped to demanding markets such as Japan, the Republic of Korea and Europe.

The province has set up a number of concentrated agricultural, forestry and fishery production areas with high economic efficiency, including developing aquaculture on Thac Ba lake.

Over the past years, locals, businesses and cooperatives are enriching themselves from cage fish farming. At present, there are 1,800 fish cages on Thac Ba lake with a total output of 10,500 tonnes last year.

In October 2019, the Ministry of Science and Technology’s National Office of Intellectual Property (NOIP) granted certification to Thac Ba lake fish.

Yen Bai also owns the country’s largest cinnamon cultivation area with Van Yen district being labeled as "capital” of cinnamon trees. In 2010, Van Yen cinnamon was awarded with geographical indication certificate by the NOIP.

Apart from cinnamon barks, there are other cinnamon-derived products such as oil, powder, handicrafts and packaging. Cinnamon products eligible for export have increased the value of post-processed cinnamon products.

Among 20 One Commune, One Product items of high economic value, five of them are Yen Bai specialties, namely Gioi Phien vermicelli, Suoi Giang shan tuyet tea, Nghia Lo seng cu rice, and Dai Minh grapefruit, which are popular at home and abroad.

With the support of retailers in Hanoi, a variety of Yen Bai specialties are available in Big C Thang Long supermarket chain, Hapromart C13 and Thanh Cong supermarkets.

Partnership among farmers, producers and businesses to bring local specialties to supermarkets in Hanoi not only helps consumers access many choices but also contributes to upholding products’ value.

It will be a driving force for Yen Bai farmers, businesses and cooperatives to improve product quality, heed product origin and food hygiene while sustainably developing markets and expand production.
