Yen Hop commune’s Ngu banana meets OCOP standards

  •  Friday, July 30, 2021

YBO - Ngu banana of the Trung Thanh organic agriculture service cooperative in Yen Hop commune has been recognized as a three-star “One Commune-One Product” (OCOP) product.

Nearly ten years ago, famers in Yen Hop commune planted Ngu banana to replace traditional plants on alluvial areas along the Hong (Red) River. Local people said that this plant is easy to grow because it can adapt to sandy soil and requires little care and fertilizer.

Although each banana bunch has 5-8 hands, it takes short time for the plant to grow and develop. This plant is grown and harvested all year round and is ready to produce fruit 11 months after planting.

Ngu banana growers can sell their product in markets or to traders for 5,000 – 20,000 VND per kilogram.

The Trung Thanh organic agriculture service cooperative has decided to cultivate this plant up to OCOP standards, developing it into an OCOP product of the province.

Last year, this product met provincial three-star OCOP standards, marking a new development milestone for the specialty.

In 2019, only 6ha of land, mainly garden and riverside land areas, in the commune was used for growing Ngu banana. But so far, the total cultivation area of Ngu banana has been expanded to 10 ha, with an average output of 180 tonnes per year.

Ye Hop commune’s Ngu banana product has been labelled and certificated to meet standards of food safety and hygiene. It is grown in line with sustainable organic and environmentally friendly processes, with the "four-no” commitment:   no pesticide, no chemical fertilizer residues, no preservatives, and no growth stimulants.

Through the cooperative's available distribution channels, Yen Hop banana is increasingly known in other localities such as Bac Ninh, Hai Phong and Bac Giang.
