Tran Yen district turns OCOP to key economic spearhead

YBO - As a purely agricultural locality, Tran Yen district in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai has over the recent years determined to intensify the One Commune One Product (OCOP) programme and taken it as a key economic spearhead to build a comprehensive new-style rural district.

The district has opted for promoting OCOP in association with exploiting the locality’s advantages of natural resources, culture and indigenous knowledge while bolstering the development of different forms of production and business model in the direction of enhancing benefits for the community.

With active participation of the entire political system, economic individuals and each local resident, OCOP products are built and developed focusing on traditional products, services and competitive advantages in the market.

The district has also targeted on planning areas and key economic programmes which have been developed and formed together with policies to support production development in association with agricultural restructuring and new- style rural area construction.

By the end of 2022, Tran Yen district had 33 OCOP products meeting the 3-4 star standards. In 2023, the district is striving to build and develop 10 more OCOP products, upgrade four products from 3 to 4 stars, and re-evaluate seven others.

A series of OCOP products have been won recognition in the market such as Gioi Phien vermicelli, Tran Yen Bat Tien tea, Bat Do bamboo shoots, Quy Mong vermicelli, Quy Mong Thai white vermicelli, among others, with many products having entered supermarkets in cities including BigC Hanoi or on e-commerce platforms like Voso.vn, Postmart.

Along with that, 100% of the agricultural production households  participating in the OCOP programme on e-commerce platforms are trained and guided in digital and business skills on e-commerce platforms.

To realise the target, the district has supported and guided businesses, cooperatives, households and individuals to digitise registration dossiers for evaluation and product classification, product registration, production and business plans, and digitise the data of each agricultural production, units that have OCOP products and post product information on the e-commerce platforms such as Bat Do Yen Bai bamboo shoot, Tran Yen pomelo, Tran Yen dried cinnamon, Tran Yen green tea...

In addition, the district has also focused on building raw material areas, production, processing and trading facilities that meet VietGAP and HACCP standards; and continued to develop value chain associated with the production and consumption of Bat Do bamboo shoot, mulberry, citrus fruit trees, hill chickens, tea...

In 2024, Nghia Lo Town developed seven new products meeting the 3-star OCOP standard and reevaluated seven products after three years of certification.

The global Halal market is valued at approximately USD 5 trillion annually, with a strong demand for cinnamon and tea products. This presents significant export opportunities for Yen Bai Province.

In 2024, Yen Bai City achieved vocational training for 2,259 individuals, exceeding the target of 1,790 by 115%. Of this total, 578 people were trained at the college level, achieving 125% of the assigned target of 461.
