Viet Hong commune develops sturgeon farming

Viet Hong commune of Tran Yen district, Yen Bai province, boasts favourable natural conditions for farming sturgeon. Making use of the potential, some local households have developed the farming of the cold-water fish in recent years and harvested initial success.

After visiting many places such as Lao Cai, Phu Tho, and Son La provinces to learn sturgeon farming experience, in 2019, Dao Van Phu and Hoang Van Binh, both residing in Ban Na hamlet, built a farm covering over 2,300 sq.m. with 11 basins for meat farming and 24 others for raising fish fry (mainly the Siberian sturgeon). The establishment is commercially farming sturgeon and supplying fry for others in Viet Hong and other localities.

Phu said as water is kept flowing constantly, sturgeons have grown well, thus generating high productivity. As this fish has high economic value and not any locality can farm, all sturgeons of his farm are always sold out, and buyers are restaurants in both Yen Bai and other provinces. Prices now average 200,000 VND (over 8.5 USD) per kg.

Sturgeon is a specialty fish that has rich nutrition and can be cooked into many dishes, so it is much preferred by consumers and brings about high profits to farmers.

Phu noted though sturgeon and fry farming is not strenuous, it requires high techniques. In particular, farmers need to guarantee sufficient supply of cold, clean, and sterilised water meeting standards to protect sturgeon from diseases and ensure fish grows well.

Sturgeon raised in about 15 months can weigh at least 2 - 2.5kg each, qualified for sale. Fish and fry produced in Viet Hong are mainly sold in the commune, others in Yen Bai, and neighbouring provinces. Average prices stand at 200,000 - 250,000 VND per kg, higher than other types of farmed fish.

Viet Hong boasts topographical advantages, abundant cold water flowing from high mountain, and cool climate all year round, which are all favourable conditions for farming sturgeon. It is currently home to four small- and medium-sized sturgeon farming establishments. The expansion of sturgeon farming is expected to help create jobs, bring about higher profits, and improve income for rural residents.

Nguyen Dinh Huyen, who runs a sturgeon farm in Ban Na hamlet, said some local farming establishments have reaped much profit. After learning experience and receiving technical assistance from Phu, in 2022, he decided to invest more than 200 million VND in building sturgeon basins with the hope of securing good earnings.

Trieu Khanh Thien, Chairman of the Viet Hong communal People’s Committee, said the local administration is working with relevant agencies of Tran Yen district to devise policies for supporting sturgeon farmers and encouraging farming households to set up cooperatives to connect with one another in fish production and sale.
