Changes in economic structure in Mu Cang Chai

YBO - During 2020 - 2022, Mu Cang Chai has raised 3.169 trillion VND for investment in socio-economic development. The district has boosted tourism development, considering it a key task that makes important contributions to the restructuring of the local economy.

In order to create momentum for economic restructuring, Mu Cang Chai district has focused on mobilising, integrating and effectively using investment resources for socio-economic infrastructure development, with priority given to the development of transport infrastructure, especially regional and inter-regional connectivity, urban and new rural infrastructure, and health care and education.

Chairman of the district People’s Committee Le Trong Khang said the locality has popularised images of its people, potential and advantages in combination with attracting investment to tourism.

Moreover, cultural and tourism activities have created a unique highlight. Various events, products and services have become attractive brands for domestic and foreign tourists such as tourism in the watering season in combination with the Paragliding Festival "Flying in the watering season", the festival of discovering national special site Mu Cang Chai terraced fields and tours of culture and magnificent natural landscapes.

Up to now, the whole district is home to five guest houses and homestay facilities, 75 restaurants and eateries in service of 3,000 guests each day. The number of visitors to the district has increased sharply over years, averaging 100,000 per year.

In industrial production, the district has strengthened industrial promotion activities and encouraged the development of handicrafts, production and processing of agro-forestry, food, brocade weaving and mechanical processing.

In addition, it launched an agriculture restructuring project in the direction of improving added value and sustainable development in combination with new rural development, gradually shifting from small-scale animal husbandry to concentrated, semi-industrial, commodity-oriented one.

So far, the district has had two products that have been granted with trademark registration certificates, namely Mu Cang Chai hawthorn berry and Mu Cang Chai black bone chicken, one product awarded with a certificate of geographical indication registration - Mu Cang Chai honey, seven One Commune, One Product products at the provincial level, and five value chains associated with product consumption. The production value of agro-forestry and fisheries in 2021 reached 547.5 billion VND, up 149.3% from 2015.

Its economic sector witnessed a clear shift in the direction of forming a connectivity chain, improving values in combination with ensuring environment and sustainable development. Economic restructuring in the right direction has helped Mu Cang Chai gradually narrow gap with other districts, improved people's lives with per capita income of 26.4 million VND each year in 2021, marking a 1.98-fold increase from 2015. It has laid a foundation to build Mu Cang Chai into a tourist district and a special, safe and friendly destination by 2025.
