The province has sharpened focus on developing many local staples like Dai Binh grapefruit (Yen Binh district), and orange, Dien grapefruit, Duong Canh tangerine (Van Chan, Luc Yen and Tran Yen districts).  Total fruit production topped 42,970 tonnes, an increase of 12,770 tonnes from 2015. The fruits were valued at more than 300 billion VND.

As part of the effort to carry out the agricultural restructuring strategy, the province penned its "fruit orchard development” project for the 2016-2020 period to tap its strength to cultivate citrus trees to the fullest extent. Accordingly, the locality will develop a large-scale and high-quality citrus area and apply advanced technologies into plantation.

It will work to build and register collective brands for Van Chan orange, Luc Yen orange, and Luc Yen seedless persimmon; and have recognised brands for Dai Minh grapefruit. Besides, Yen Bai is developing farms cultivating orchards in line with VietGAP standards.

Currently, districts across the province are focusing on developing large commercial production to meet market demand. Some 5,000 hectares were zoned off for plantation of citrus fruits of local strengths. Output of this kind of fruit is expected to top 33,000 tonnes per year.

In addition, the province is cultivating hawthorns in an area of more than 9,200 hectares. Last year, the tree yielded 5,000 tonnes and the figure for 2020 is forecast at 5,500. The province expects to gain 30 billion VND from the hawthorns orchards this year./.
