Nghia Lo township is the earliest to harvest rice in the Spring crop and also one of the major commodity rice production hubs of the province with a total rice area of over 2,000 hectares. The locality’s rice productivity has reached over 6.3 tonnes per hectare with a total output of over 13,125 tonnes.

Nguyen Van Khieu, a farmer from An Son village, Hanh Son commune said that in the Spring crop, with the support of enterprises, his family cultivated over 18,000sq.m of rice, using the Seng Cu variety. Thanks to favourable weather conditions and no pests and diseases, his family harvested over 12 tonnes of rice, which has been purchased by businesses at the price of 12,000-13,000 VND (0.52-0.56 USD/kg), higher than that in the previous crop.

Meanwhile, Tran Yen district has finished the harvest of 80 percent of its total 2,236 hectares of rice areas. The estimated productivity is about 5.6 tonnes per hectare, up over 0.1 tonne per hectare compared to the previous crop, with total production of 12,517 tonnes, a rise of about 94.9 tonnes.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Spring rice crop this year was cultivated amid high rise in agricultural materials prices, especially fertilizer, due to COVID-19 impacts.

As of June 10, Yen Bai had harvested about 10,000 hectares of rice fields. Initial evaluation showed that the productivity is about 5.6 tonnes per hectare, with total production of 109,081 tonnes, a rise of 128.46 tonnes compared to the previous crop. Many localities have reported high productivity, including Nghia Lo, Van Chan, Luc Yen, and Van Yen.

At the same time, a change in the structure of rice varieties has been recorded, along with progresses in cultivation method, with larger areas of organic rice farms.

In the upcoming Summer-Autumn crop, Yen Bai will grow rice on more than 22,070 hectares with an expected output of about 107,400 tonnes, including about 6,000-7,000 hectares to be cultivated early to make room for the winter crop.

Pham Dinh Vinh, deputy head of the Division of Cultivation and Plant Protection said that in the face of crop pressure, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed localities across the province to focus on speeding up the harvest of the Spring crop and start cultivating the Summer-Autumn crop as soon as possible.

At the same time, the province will increase the areas of extremely short and short-term rice varieties with high yield, high quality, and strong resilience against pests and diseases, he said. Based on the guiding calendar given by the province, districts, township and Yen Bai city have been asked to design their specific sowing time, he added.
