Data shows that by the end of 2021, Yen Bai was home to 7,436 ha of tea, down 2,220 ha from 2016. Top tea growing areas with  higher tea yield than the provincial average include Nghia Lo town (172.85 quintals per ha), Van Chan district (105.17 quintals per ha) and Yen Binh district (98.96 quintals per ha). The province harvested over 68,649 tonnes of fresh tea buds, worth more than 300 billion VND, last year.

The province will also work to improve the efficiency of processing facilities, modernise equipment and technology, diversify products and enhance quality and food safety to make sure its products can earn higher added value and thus raising incomes of farmers and processors.

In the Yen Bai People’s Council’s Resolution 69/NQ-HDND dated December 16, 2020 on support policies for agriculture, forestry and fisheries from 2021 – 2025, the province aims to maintain about 7,400 ha of tea, 98 – 100 quintals per ha in productivity and 68,000 tonnes in output.

To reach the goals, district-level authorities are urged to develop production plans in accordance with the province's overall planning and continue replacing low-yield old tea varieties with new ones having higher yields. They should also focus on building large-scale tea farms and strengthening linkages with tea processing facilities and enterprises.

Growers are encouraged to use high-quality varieties, for example, Shan, Bat Tien, Kim Tuyen, LDP1 and LDP2; join cooperatives that promote safe production in line with VietGAP standards or others; and sign contracts with processing facilities to form partnership.

Training must also be provided to farmers to help them apply advanced farming techniques to increase productivity and output, while processing facilities should continue upgrading production lines to ensure food safety and improve packaging and traceability.
