YBO - In 2019, Tran Yen became the first district of Yen Bai and the north-western region to be honoured with the new-style rural area title. Local authorities ever since have worked to meet advanced criteria and turn the district into an exemplary new-style rural area.

When the National Target Programme on building new-style rural areas was first launched, Tran Yen had a modest starting point as each commune in the district only met five criteria and six communes and 46 villages across 22 communes faced difficulties in socio-economic infrastructure.

The rate of poor families exceeded 30 percent at that time.

After realising the target, Tran Yen views building an exemplary new-style rural area as a foundation for it to improve quality of the criteria in a sustainable manner.

To date, the district has one exemplary new-style rural commune; five others meeting criteria of advanced new-style rural areas namely Viet Thanh, Minh Quan, Nga Quan, Bao Hung and Tan Dong; and 73 villages recognised as exemplary new-style rural areas.

Rural landscapes have been given a facelift and infrastructure built in a concerted manner to facilitate production and raise people’s income.

Head of the agriculture and rural development department of the district Trieu Thi Bich Lieu said Tran Yen has bolstered agricultural restructuring in line with building new-style rural areas, and given priority to the development of organic production models integrated with the value chain so as to improve quality, value and efficiency of its key products.

Tran Yen has taken the lead among districts in Yen Bai province in the building and implementation of value chains that link production with consumption, notably those for poultry in Minh Du, bamboo products, and organic cinnamon, among others.

The district is home to 24 three-star items recognised by the ‘One Commune, One Product’ (OCOP) programme. Many of them sell well in many other localities and are even shipped abroad like Bat do Hong Ca bamboo shoots, Bat tien Hung Khanh tea and Viet Hong mineral water.

This year, Tran Yen sets a target to have all recognised communes maintain their title, four communes meet criteria of advanced new-style rural areas, and 25 villages become exemplary new-style rural ones. This will serve as a foundation for the district to fulfil all criteria of exemplary new-style rural area and receive recognition of the Prime Minister.
