Nguyen The Xuyen from Khe Dua village owns over five ha of eight-year-old cinnamon trees which are grown organically without the use of fertilisers, pesticides or chemicals.

Xuyen said though he has yet to receive a certificate for organic cultivation, he still does it this way as it brings a lot of benefits. The products are sold at higher prices, from trunks to barks and leaves. In the next decade, his family expect to earn 3 billion VND from the tree.

At present, Vien Son commune is home to over 2,600 ha of cinnamon trees, over 70 percent of them are grown organically, bringing high income for farmers. This year, cinnamon bark output is estimated at 700 tonnes with a total value of 35 billion VND while cinnamon leaves, at 6,000 tonnes, are worth 9 billion VND, and cinnamon seedlings are valued at 5 billion VND.

Apart from being free from fertilisers and pesticides, 500ha of organic cinnamon grown by 53 households in Vien Son also benefit from a sustainable agricultural production programme that advocates environment protection since 2020.

Tran Van Trang, Director of CQ Production and Trade Company, said his company was instructed how to collect and treat wastewater, agricultural and daily wastes in manufacturing facilities and residential areas, as well as grow various trees on land, thus protecting biodiversity.

During the years before the COVID-19 pandemic, he said his company purchased about 300 tonnes of cinnamon and earned 17 billion VND. Trang said as he himself also cultivates organic cinnamon, he found that many cinnamon growers have changed their awareness of cultivation to improve product quality.

Thanks to cinnamon farming, many households in Vien Son have escaped poverty and become rich. Their lives improved considerably. The rate of poor households only account for 6.33 percent while that of near-poor households make up 3.17 percent. The average income per capita reaches 39 million VND per year.

Chairman of the communal People’s Committee Ban Phuc Hin said in coming years, the commune will continue encouraging cinnamon farmers to avoid the use of pesticides and fertilisers, toward building safe cinnamon farming areas. It will also partner with businesses to sign contracts with residents to build organic cinnamon areas, for the sake of the sustainable development of traditional cinnamon farming areas in the locality.
