Khen Mong Festival and announcement of Khen Mong Art as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage will take place on December 23

YênBái - (YBO) - The Mong ethnic minority people's Khen Performance Festival and the announcement of the decision to include the art of music of the Mong people in Mu Cang Chai, Tram Tau, and Van Chan districts, Yen Bai province, on the list of national intangible cultural heritage will take place on December 23 with various activities.

In addition to main activities in the opening ceremony of the event, Mu Cang Chai district will also host many activities before and after the festival such as street performances; a Mong ethnic cultural space; exchanges and performances of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Mong people; a Khen dance competition; pounding banh day (flat glutinous rice cake); paragliding activities at Khau Pha pass, etc.

Mu Cang Chai, Tram Tau and Van Chan are located in the western mountains of Yen Bai province, and the districts are home of many ethnic groups such as Mong, Dao, Tay, and Thai.

Particularly, unique melodies of the Mong ethnic people’s Khen are a typical traditional culture and an indispensable musical instrument in their lives. The instrument is a multi-voiced musical instrument, producing the sound of mountains and forests. It is also used in many different occasions such as holidays, New Year, celebrations, welcoming guests, and making friends.

The art of the Mong ethnic people's Ken in Mu Cang Chai, Tram Tau and Van Chan districts, Yen Bai province, was included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in the form of folk performing arts according to Decision No. 1401 /QD-BVHTTDL by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on June 1, 2023.

Being a national intangible cultural heritage has further affirmed the traditional cultural value of the Khen in daily life of the Mong ethnic community, contributing to honouring the heritage and becoming a unique tourism product in the western districts of the province./.
