YBO - Located in the Northwest of Vietnam, the national scenic site of Thac Ba lake is one of the three largest artificial lakes in Vietnam formed during the construction of Thac Ba Hydropower Plant. It runs through the territory of Yen Binh and Luc Yen districts, covering nearly 20,000 hectares of water surface and housing more than 1,300 large and small green islands and a system of caves deep in the heart of its limestone mountains.

In addition, Thac Ba is situated in the Chay river basin - a unique cultural space which preserves many unique values about the life, farming, culture and beliefs of mountainous ethnic minorities such as Dao, Tay, Nung, and Cao Lan.

In 2018, the Government approved Yen Bai’s master development plan for the lake until 2025 with a vision to 2030. Accordingly, the area is identified as one of the 48 sites with potential to become national tourism destinations by developing tourism products associated with the lake ecology, landscape, and indigenous cultural values.

Key tourism products of Thac Ba include eco-tours around the lake, community-based and resort tourism, as well as those serving demand for health, sport, and entertainment.

New development opportunities have opened up for Yen Bai when the Prime Minister approved a master plan by 2040 on building the Thac Ba lake national tourist area into one of the driving forces for Vietnam’s tourism development.

The plan combines tourism and sustainable urban and rural development on the basis of conserving and promoting natural values and traditional culture, and ensuring national defense – security and the safety of the hydroelectric dams.

The plan eyes turning Thac Ba into a modern tourism, resort and cultural site of national and international standards that offers diverse, quality, and competitive tourism products.
