Van Yen famers find fortune in cinnamon

YênBái - Van Yen district in the northern province of Yen Bai has more than 52,000 hectares of cinnamon in all 25 communes and towns, with more than 80% of households in the district engaging in the cultivation and earning high income from the tree.

As a key crop, the district has 25,357 hectares of cinnamon with geographical indications in eight communes, including Phong Du Thuong, Phong Du Ha, Xuan Tam, Chau Que Ha, Tan Hop, Dai Son, Vien Son, and Mo Vang; and more than 4,500 hectares of organic cinnamon certified to European and American standards (Son Ha Spices Company 2,500 hectares, Olam Vietnam Company 1,500 hectares, Vicimex Company 500 hectares).

Van Yen’s cinnamon has the second highest essential oil content in Vietnam, only after thate in Tra My of Quang Nam province. The product has become popular, helping to increase its economic value.

Cinnamon is contributing to poverty alleviation as many local people have found fortune in the trade.
