Although 2021 recorded lighter impacts compared to previous years, the province suffered 10 disasters of whirlwind, heavy downpours and impacts of the second, seventh and eighth typhoons that hit Vietnam last year.

The disasters were estimated to claimed five lives, injured three, damaged 870 houses, and submerged 140 ha of crops and 12 ha of farming areas. In addition, 200 cattle were killed and dozens of transport, irrigation works and facilities destroyed, causing losses of more than 17.5 billion VND (766,230 USD).

In March, heavy rains coupled with whirlwind, thunder and hails in Van Chan blew away roofs of 100 houses, resulting losses of about 250 million VND.

As the storm season is nearing, local authorities have ordered relevant agencies to devise plans and evacuate people in high-risk areas, review the building of infrastructure, especially transport, irrigation works, drainage system and reservoirs, and maintain a high level of preparedness.

The agencies were asked to bolster communications, training and drills on natural disaster preparedness, thereby raising public awareness of the issue.

They need to take the initiative in building backup plans and handling of high-risk regions, appoint personnel and prepare equipment in case of incidents. Plans to procure and supply essentials for remote and mountainous areas are also vital before the storm season arrives.

The police and the military were asked to be on guard, keep a close watch on the situation, and stand ready to work together with rescuers and support localities when needed.
