People of Cong Da village, Au Lau commune of Yen Bai city receive support to set up a self-managing group in garbage collection and transport.

In 2019, during the implementation of a model to build sites for waste assortment, collection and treatment, Viet Thanh commune in Tran Yen district, received 42 concentrated garbage bins, 1,640 bins for sorting out trash for families, and two vehicles for the transport of waste and necessary equipment for garbage collection.

Local people received guidance on waste assortment and treatment to keep the community clean. Each village built self-managing groups which are responsible for gathering daily garbage at proper locations and bringing it to treatment sites.

Viet Thanh residents have closely followed the closed process, helping it become a new-style rural area.
From its success, the model has been multiplied to other localities. The province is home to 100 cooperatives and self-managing groups collecting and transporting solid waste in rural areas.

The units are set up by the People’s Committees of communes and local people donate funds for garbage collection, with frequency depending on the amount of waste discharged at respective locality (an average of thrice per week).

The model has greatly contributed to reducing environmental pollution, especially littering, and raising public awareness of environmental protection through waste classification and collection, together with regular rural road cleanups.

It also offers solutions for Yen Bai to achieve the target of having 80 percent of solid waste at rural residential areas gathered, transported and handled by 2025.
