Hoang The Sinh wins Mekong River Literature Awards 2021

YênBái - Hoang The Sinh, the author of the “Canh dong Chum mua hoa ban” (The Plain of Jars in bauhinia flower season) novel, and another Vietnamese writer – Nguyen Van Hong, have won the Mekong River Literature Awards 2021.

The work by Sinh, former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Yen Bai Newspaper, tells about the arduous but heroic struggle of Vietnamese volunteers during the Plain of Jars campaign in Xieng Khoang, Laos, in 1971-1972.

This was a defensive campaign of the Vietnam - Laos coalition army to defeat the plot to invade Laos of Lao right-wing forces and the Thai army during the rainy season, and to protect the liberated area of the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khouang.

The main characters - Thanh Binh, Yen Hoang, Minh Phu and Duong Minh – are classmates. In their 20s, they became Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who performed international missions in the neighbouring country.

The young soldiers braved many hardships and the fierceness of bombs and shells, fought bravely and won the victory. Many of them laid down their lives in the Plain of Jars when they were very young.

The Lao Writers' Association hosted the award ceremony of the Mekong River Literature Awards last year. This is an annual literature award of six countries in the Mekong River region - Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, China and Vietnam.

This award aims to promote the friendship, cooperation, solidarity, and literature development among the countries.
