Yen Bai takes measures to protect livestock from extreme cold

The temperature in Yen Bai province has dropped sharply over the past few days after moderate to heavy rains with temperatures below 7 degree Celsius in the mountains area since February 18.

To protect livestock in extremely cold weather, the province’s agriculture sector officials have instructed local farmers not to free range their animals but vaccinate them, stock up feed and keep their cattle in low-lying areas. Instructions on how to keep fishponds warm have also been given.
Dao Duy Duc, head of Yen Bai province’s Livestock Production and Animal Health Sub-department, said as the temperatures in the mountains are much lower than those in the low-lying area, local people are advised to keep their animals in covered closures in the cold weather.
"Farmers should cover the sties and prepare firewood to keep their livestock warm," he said, adding that the total herd of cattle in the province is 180,000.
