Yen Bai tourism sector prepares for post-COVID-19 challenges

YênBái - According to the Yen Bai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in the first quarter of this year, Yen Bai welcomed 55,238 tourists, down 56,5 percent from the same period last year and representing 36.2 percent of the yearly plan. The number of international arrivals was 7,488, down 65 percent year on year, while the number of domestic holiday-makers was 47,750, down 57.8 percent year on year.

In the January-March period, the average hotel occupancy rate was estimated at 20 percent, a year-on-year decrease of 60 percent. The tourism sector earned 33.7 billion VND in revenue, down 57.2 percent from the same period last year.

The department aims to serve 800,000 tourists this year, earning 481 billion VND. Besides, it has given advice to the province to devise a plan to deal with challenges facing the tourism sector amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Accordingly, cultural festivals and tourism events will be held later this year in order to attract visitors, thus making up for the early-year decline due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The cultural and tourism events include the Muong Lo Cultural-Tourism Festival; exploring terraced rice fields in Mu Cang Chai; climbing Ta Xua mountain in Ban Cong commune, Tram Tau district; Tu Le "Com” (young sticky rice flake) festival; a ceremony to worship the ancient tea tree in Suoi Giang; the Dong Cuong temple festival in Dong Cuong commune, Van Yen district; the Full Moon festival in Yen Bai city; the 2nd tourism programme "Visit the Pearl Land” in Luc Yen district…

The locality will organise training courses on professional skills for tourism staff, upgrade roads in festival and religious tourism sites, provide financial support for households providing accommodation and home-stay services, and establish traditional art troupes to perform at public tourism events.

Countryside markets will be built in Tram Tau and Mu Cang Chai townships to serve tourists on weekends. The province will support launching spiritual and adventure tourism products while developing tourism cooperatives.

Investment will be poured into developing typical farming products such as Gioi Phien rice noodle, five-colour sticky rice, black chung cake, dried meat (Nghia Lo commune); cinnamon in Van Yen district, Dai Minh pomelos, Bach Ha rice, Thac Ba dried fish in Yen Binh district.
